Abstract :
To this paper we consider the potential throughput gains of a FHMA system using variable rate coding. The throughput gains are based on the assumption that the exact number of users in the system, m, is exactly known at any time as opposed to just accurate statistics of the user population mean, λ, which is Poisson distributed. We present theoretical bounds for throughput gains that can be achieved when coding at capacity and show the throughput gains due to variable rate coding in synchronous and asynchronous hopping systems using Reed-Solomon (RS) coding with and without accurate statistics of the user population mean
