Abstract :
In this paper, an 8/6 bipolar switched reluctance motors with segmental rotor (SSRM) which is excitated with bipolar currents ensuring no collision of the magnetic flux in the stator teeth is proposed and the operation principle of bipolar SSRM is explained. For the same frame size and same output power, the basic characteristics of bipolar SSRM and bipolar switched reluctance motor (SRM), such as torque, phase currents and copper loss, are obtained and compared with 2D finite element computation. Comparison of two motors in iron loss is also carried out. It is found that the decrease in total losses over bipolar SRM is about one third, so the 8/6 bipolar SSRM will provide a novel design with lower losses and improved efficiency.
