Abstract
Stray load losses have significant detrimental effects on the performance of an induction motor. Machine designers have been unable to agree upon a consistent and reliable method for predicting these losses. This lack of agreement leads many designers to ignore stray load losses or to assume them to be equal to a fixed percentage, 0.5% of the input power. Numerous studies have been presented to suggest that this is an underestimation of the stray load losses. In this paper we show that these losses are significant for some classes of induction motors. Consequently more work is needed to accurately predict stray load losses
