Abstract
Summary form only given. An overview of existing empirical dielectric models, as well as trends for establishing new ones, was presented. The goal was to develop models that provide physical representations for low-loss dielectrics that are applicable over a wide frequency spectrum. In order to obtain more accurate representations for a general group of materials, several researchers have attempted to obtain empirical models by modifying the basic Debye representation. Shin-Yeung have shown that the Debye model as well as the empirical models developed by previous researchers satisfy a nonlinear differential equation having the following property: Q(Q(F))=kQ(F), where Q is the nonlinear differential operator, k is a proportionality constant, and F is the susceptibility spectral shape function. The solution to this nonlinear differential equation provides a guide for developing empirical models that might be applicable for a certain class of materials. In order to investigate the spectral behavior of these models, several computer simulations were performed. By using the Debye model as a reference, the empirical models available in the literature were compared.<>
