Abstract :
Summary form only given. Linear magnetoelectric (or bianisotropic) materials with constitutive relations in the frequency domain were considered. The determination of the constitutive parameters was considered when a slab of material with planar boundaries at z=0 and z=d is available. If the slab is sufficiently large, free-space measurements may be possible; hence, the case of a linearly polarized plane wave incident on such a slab was studied, extracting as much information as possible on the constitutive parameters from the measurements of amplitude and phase of the reflection and transmission coefficients. When the sample cannot be made sufficiently large, other types of measurements must be conducted. What information can be extracted by measuring reflection and transmission coefficients for a sample inserted in a rectangular waveguide was studied. Measurements in a stripline configuration were considered. A general conclusion was that no single experimental setup can provide all the information needed to solve this inverse problem. Hence, several measurements utilizing different experimental setups must be conducted on the same material.<>
