Abstract :
The electrical properties of polyester filled with ZnO, Al2 O3 or SiC have been investigated including electrical conduction, electrical tree growth and surge absorption. It was found that the J-V characteristics of the ZnO filled polyester are non-ohmic, exhibiting good insulation at low field and semi-conduction at high fields. The maximum safe current, the threshold strength and breakdown strength can be controlled by the concentration of ZnO. A sheet of ZnO filled polyester has been used as a barrier in polyester with point-plane electrodes. The tree growth is sensitive to the presence of the barrier; the tree growth time and breakdown time being significantly extended when barriers were used. The ZnO filled polyester also performed well as a surge absorber, successfully dissipating and absorbing transient currents, resulting from impulse voltage application
