Abstract :
Experimental and theoretical work about energetic ion emission from massive targets obtained with 35 fs laser pulses at an intensity level of 1018 W/cm2 to 1019 W/cm2 is reported. Ultrashort laser pulses in combination with a hot electron confining target can drive ions to MeV energies via a direct field acceleration mechanism.
