Abstract
Low cost, high-performance, and compact optical transceivers are urgently demanded in order to spread passive optical network (PON) systems widely. Especially it is important to realize high sensitivity and wide dynamic range optical transceivers because distances to subscribers for PON systems can be extended and the number of branches can be increased. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a unique, very high sensitivity and wide dynamic range optical receiver in which an in-line photodiode (PD) module and a transimpedance amplifier with AGC function are directly mounted on a ceramic package. In order to attain the optical receiver, we devised a CMOS preamplifier circuit for low noise and wide dynamic range, reduced the parasitic capacitance of the input of the preamplifier and utilized the PD module, which passive alignment technology were applied to
