  • Abstract
The US Postal Service currently uses the post numeric encoding technique (POSTNET) for sorting mail pieces with the help of a bar code reader. In this experimental study an alternate POSTNET bar code reader using optical fiber sensing technique has been investigated. The sensor includes a displacement sensor (extrinsic) where light exits and reenters the optical fiber after its intensity has been modulated according to POSTNET specifications
