Abstract
When measuring the bit error rate (BER) performance of Satcom modems operating at telegraph rates, or the sub-telegraph rates employed by some military AJ modems, the size of the sample of bits that must be measured to ensure statistical significance of the error rate calculation is prohibitively large. This problem coupled with the need to provide stable levels of noise and signal, accurate over such a long period of time has led to the development of an automatic bit error rate tester (ABERT) by the UK Defence Research Agency
