Abstract
The major differences in approaches taken by European administrations to the application of fiber-optic systems are highlighted. The emergence of a comprehensive European undersea system network based on optical fibers is identified and reviewed. Point-to-point systems in use and under development are described. It is concluded that although optical fiber is becoming the preferred medium for long-haul-network growth, no consensus of opinion has yet emerged about the optimum local-access topology.<>
