Abstract :
Visionary thinkers have long assumed that C4I and modeling and simulation (M&S) technologies would be merged. Yet despite the obvious promise, progress has been painfully slow. The current revolution in military affairs and the evolution of Joint warfighting doctrine are catalyzing new efforts in this important area. This paper explores the reasons for a renewed interest in merging C4I and M&S capabilities, summarizes the significant progress made to date and discusses the challenges which must be met if M&S is to be routinely used in military operations
