Abstract
An integrated heterodyne optical modulator for a 60GHz ROF system, which is composed of DSB-SC band-pass modulator with 30GHz band-pass characteristic and 5.5GHz intermediate-frequency single sideband modulator, is proposed. Modulated signals are sent via the fiber-optic distribution network to the remote antenna unit where optical heterodyning in a wide bandwidth photodiode takes place, and generate 54.5 GHz 65.5 GHz band signal with reduced chromatic dispersion effect. Especially, local polarization domain-inversion in the half waveguide region of the interaction length, enables SSB modulation as well as the bias operation by DC. The analysis and the optimized design of the device are presented.
