Abstract :
The IEEE 802.17 resilient packet ring (RPR) was recently standardized but its fairness algorithm still suffers from the oscillation phenomena deteriorating the performance of the RPR network. This paper proposes a bandwidth reallocation scheme compatible with the fairness algorithm, under which each congested node calculates the optimal fair rate with the estimated number of upstream nodes requiring bandwidth more and then distributes its excess bandwidth to those nodes with advertising the fair rate. The evaluation results show that under the static traffic condition the proposed scheme fairly distributes 95% of the bottleneck link capacity with only one or two reallocation cycles and the enhanced fairness algorithm, with the proposed scheme provides not only lower delay bound but also less burstiness.
