Abstract :
By multiplexing 24 synchronous input channels of 141.248 Mb/s each and using 3B/4B line encoding, an experimental optical transmission system with a bit rate of 4.519 Gb/s has been developed. A description is given of the components of this system, which have been realized using a combination of a few GaAs and silicon integrated circuits. The transmitter, receiver, and silicon-chip multiplexer, limiting amplifier, regenerator, and demultiplexer, are highlighted.<>
