Abstract
An experimental study on the chaotic behavior of the partial discharge (PD) activity in sample stator bars in laboratory multistress conditions is reported. The main theme of the paper is a demonstration of the possibilities and experiences in correlating the aging process of the epoxy mica dielectric material in power generators with the frequency and shape of PD signals with the help of chaos and fractal theory. In order to analyze the aging process and its correlation with the patterns of PD activity in insulation systems, the chaotic aspects of the amplitude-time characteristics of discharges are investigated. The fractal dimensions of a time series of PD amplitude were studied using the correlation dimension. It is intended to establish a linkage between the noninteger fractal dimension to the frequency and shape of PD in order to permit characterization of chaotic behavior of discharges as the insulation system ages
