Abstract :
The on-line world is turning to non-linear editing rapidly. Yet non-linear on-line is not simply linear on-line brought up to date with discs rather than tape. It is a different approach to editing that brings with it the potential to completely change post production operational styles. What is more the technology of fast high capacity discs, that has enabled non-linear on-line, continues to progress rapidly. Comparisons with non-linear off-line systems and conventional linear suites highlight the strengths of non-linear on-line and areas where advances would bring further operational benefits. The paper considers the design constraints of the component parts of non-linear edit systems and discusses the likely implications of continuing technology improvements. The implications of shared storage or video servers on editing are discussed. The paper concludes with an examination of the opportunities and draw-backs that non-linear has on the role of the on-line editor, and restates the importance of designing both systems and structures that allow people to deliver their best
