Abstract
Summary form only given. The IEC 61968/70 Common Information Model (CIM) standards lay the foundation for an enterprise semantic model to achieve interoperability between the different utility domains as envisioned by the NIST Smart Grid Roadmap. Over the years the CIM has evolved as extension have been added to support new business needs and exchanges of data between these different domains. This presentation describes the evolution of the CIM and the new extensions that were added to the operational CIM to support planning applications as used in utility Planning departments. The initial goal was to enable utilities to develop a single network model that would support both planning and operations needs by developing new interface profiles for the exchange of static models (i.e., steady state and short circuit models). This was later expanded to support the exchange of solved power system state models for creating planning base cases and for day ahead congestion forecasts as needed by ENTSO-E in managing the interconnected transmission grid in Europe.
