Abstract :
The location of a series capacitor bank influences both cost and design. End-line applications make protection schemes easier but can increase costs associated with older relays at nearby substations affected by the voltage reversal phenomenon. Contrarily, mid-line applications can reduce relay replacement costs but makes protection more difficult. Entergy recently studied mid-line and end-line application of a series capacitor on a 66 mile line in its Western Region. A comparison of these two installations is described in this paper.
