Abstract
Fundamental principles of variable structure control (VSC) and sliding mode control (SLMC) are presented. Use of VSC/SLMC in industrial applications is surveyed, academic research of VSC/SLMC as used in AC and DC drives is reviewed, and advantages and disadvantages of using SLMC/VSC in practical applications are analyzed
