Abstract :
The evolutionary development of the access network is discussed. The practicality of 53 different promising coherent broadband access fiber network topologies is considered. Signal levels, initial optical component costs, services, and technological risks are incorporated in this comparison. The study is topical because present telecommunication access network planning is predicated on the adoption of a direct detection fiber system.<>
