An evolution to a CSCW design methodology

This paper describes the development of a design method for designing CSCW systems. It is based on experience gained in the design of large CSCW systems characterized by a top level predefined process predefined but where the activities in each step of this process are carried out in a non predefined manner. The design method provides a systematic way of dealing with the large volumes of detail found in such systems and reducing these detailed requirements into a working system. The method begins with techniques used in soft systems methodologies and then uses structured design rationale, supported by tools, to select commercial services.
