Abstract
Computer tools for education have become common in university research settings. However, their practical and widespread benefit has yet to be realized. Furthermore, cognitive science literature on learning and transfer suggests that concepts acquired in a single context tend to be coupled to that context and hence are not likely to be spontaneously accessed and used in new settings. Such findings suggest limits to the traditional use of computer-based environments since most learning systems facilitate problem solving only in a single context. This paper discusses Anchored Interactive Learning Environments (AILE), an emerging paradigm for computer-based instruction. AILE extend well-developed theories of educational practice into the domain of interactive computer assisted instruction. The resulting computer-based environments facilitate the sustained learning of active learners. The AdventurePlayer system is discussed, an interactive learning environment designed to facilitate constructivist learning of trip planning concepts. Principles for the design and development of other AILE systems and lessons learned are also presented
