The author argues the need for managed partnerships between universities and industries to conduct research, development and commercialisation of technology. This involves time and process paths to market. Universities should be instrumental for competitive performance. Principles for future partnership models include management of collaborative relations, venture capital, and R&D. Implications apply to intellectual property rights and technology licensing
