Abstract :
This paper describes the design of burner management system (BMS) based on distributed digital control (DDC) for large utility boilers. The BMS system is responsible for the safety of the furnace and boiler. The system protects personnel and machinery from unsafe condition in furnace, and it helps the operator in safe operation, startup, and shutdown of the boiler. DDC for BMS is implemented using Asea Brown Boveri´s PROCONTROL P system. The design highlights redundancies inbuilt in the system from the hardware/software point of view for a protection system, fault tolerance features of the PROCONTROL P system, and the system functional distribution of the control system vis a vis mechanical equipments. The design-features also include fault diagnosis, the use of functional language for application software, the use of CRT-based man machine interface for operator, and operating feedbacks obtained from different sites
