Abstract :
This paper discusses the strategy adopted by a medical device manufacturer to address a basic need in health care: monitoring the patient response to medication An opening section considers why it is desirable to address this issue technologically, outlining the empirical and rational bases of the manufacturer´s project for this. The bulk of the paper reviews the device design model-inspired from aviation safety management - and the grounds on which this approach was changed, as an illustration of the clash between metrology and semiology in health care. The final section briefly considers the need of establishing a what is scientific medicine, and what is not, and suggests that autonomous health monitoring is necessary to enable the provision of health care services according to the first principle of medicine.
