Abstract
Summary form only given. In order to reduce the initial cost of deploying a wavelength-division-multiplexed passive-optical network (WDM-PON) it has been proposed that broadband optical sources be used in the optical network unit (ONU). We demonstrate that Fabry-Perot lasers can be used as sources in a spectrally-sliced PON. Uncooled, unisolated lasers are less expensive than LED´s and typically have over ten times the output power, which increases the potential transmission distance of a PON.
