Abstract :
The optimal operation of an automated and retrieval system in a real industrial environment is discussed. First the real system is described and the most relevant problems outlined. Then an abstract model for the routing problem of the carrier is provided. The system is apt to handle only containers of given geometric characteristics. The containers are located within slots on 10-row shelves and the shelves are arranged to form four dead-end corridors
