Abstract :
A horizontal shaft magnetic bearing system represents a five degree of freedom (DOF) system. In the paper, first the modeling procedure of a laboratory prototype with two DOFs is presented. The treatment is then reduced to the modeling and control design of the y-axis. The model of reduced subsystem has one DOF and is nonlinear. It is linearized in the equilibrium point. The developed model is used for the simple PID controller design. In case of decentralized control, the same controller structure can be used to control the remaining DOFs. Comparison of experiment and simulation results for control in the y-axis is shown. Some important findings, difficulties and suggestions are summarized at the end
