Abstract :
This paper addresses the potentiality and the convenience of cryogenic copper-wound electrical machines (CCWE) cooled with liquid nitrogen (LN). In these machines, LN doesn´t only play the role of an effective cooling fluid. In fact, the potentialities of cryogenic liquids that are investigated here mainly reside in the notable decrease of resistivity of copper conductors with a consequent reduction of Joule losses for operation at low temperatures. This leads to an increase of the ratio power-per-weight. This paper attempts to study experimentally some practical issues related to the design of a LN cooled machine taking as an example the construction of a 200N LN cooled PM tubular linear actuator (TLA) with soft magnetic composite stator core.
