Abstract
In 1985 an API (American Petroleum Institute) task committee, from a cross section of the oil-producing business, was formed to update API recommended practice (RP) 500B-Classification of Locations for Electrical Installations at Drilling Rigs and Production Facilities on Land and on Marine Fixed and Mobile Platforms, published in July 1973. The two-year effort culminated in the API release of the third edition of RP 500B on October 1, 1987. The authors present the engineering decisions made by the task group that were incorporated into the new RP 500B, and the effect this document has had on the industry a year after publication
