Abstract :
A new tactile measurement system has been developed which is able to differentiate the hardness of various soft materials like living tissues. In particular it can detect harder inclusions within a softer matrix such as a tumorous knot embedded within physiological tissue. The system measures the mechanical frequency response of the tissue. It is intended to integrate this “vibrotactile sensor” inside the top of a tactile rod for endoscopic surgery, in order to provide the surgeon a substitute for the missing tactile feeling
