Abstract :
In this paper we present a discussion of the design and implementation of a new transport protocol specifically developed for mobile ad hoc networks. The protocol allows applications complete control in deciding the level of reliability and the quality of service (QoS) desired for different portions of a data stream. Unlike TCP, however, ATP is a lightweight protocol and unlike UDP, it provides feedback to the application regarding the status of the connection(s). We have implemented ATP in the FreeBSD kernel (a version of Unix) and tested its performance. We show that the design of ATP provides the right balance between network transparency and application flexibility
