Abstract
A method for recognizing handwritten Arabic numerals using Fourier descriptors is presented. The classification phase is based on a new similarity definition introduced from one of the Banach algebras of continuous and bounded plane curves. The learning phase is developed using a man-machine interactive system in which the role of man as character-source and the role of the machine as recognizer are partially interchangeable
