Abstract :
Topologies for three-phase segmented-rotor flux-switching machines employing a DC field winding are presented and examined on the basis of the peak armature flux linkage, induced phase EMF and torque capability. The basic principle of these types of machines is based on an unconventional configuration, using a segmental rotor to modulate and switch polarity of the flux linkages in the armature windings. Both the field and armature systems are located on the stator, with clear advantages. The three-phase topologies are examined using finite element simulations. It is found that the 12/8 configuration is the optimal topology on the balance of the considered characteristics. Other topologies may warrant consideration depending on application and tolerance of the EMF waveform distortion and unbalanced magnetic side-pull. The EMF waveforms and torque predicted in the simulations are validated experimentally for the 12/8 topology.
