Abstract :
Some examples of leaks occurring in pipelines are considered, and an overview of classical leak detection systems and the engineering basis of a novel type of detector system are given. The hydrocarbon sensor system consists of an alarm module and sensing cable. This sensing cable provides distributed coverage by detecting leaks of most fuels and solvents at any point along its length. The cable can be used in lengths of up to 2 km with a resolution of approximately 1% of the length for leak detection. The simple electrical circuit is also described that locates and detects a leak anywhere along the length of the sensor
