Abstract :
Deregulated power business is increasing pressure to the power companies to deliver scheduled power with standard voltage. In this situation reactive power compensation by installing capacitor bank in the practical transmission system can reduce real power loss. But installation of higher order MVAR capacitor bank sometimes be comes practically infeasible in the old substations of India due to less space in the switchyard and also for electrical safety purpose. A new metaheuristic technique named Modified Cultural Algorithm has been applied for doing loss minimization of the transmission system through reactive power compensation keeping the practical situation in mind. This soft computing technique has given result which is practically feasible in Indian scenario coupled with wanted economical benefit.
