Abstract
A traffic flow stabilizing controller for automated highway systems (AHS) is described. This controller employs aggregate measures of vehicular density and velocity and exploits the notion of activity to abstract the dynamics of vehicle manoeuvres. The control problem involves stabilizing the velocities of vehicles along a network of highways in such a way that the traffic flow is kept as close as possible to a prescribed input-output travel demand. The design considers complex traffic patterns and highway network topologies. Simulation results are discussed
