Abstract :
Summary form only given. Dielectric-loaded accelerating (DLA) structures, formed by inserting a dielectric liner is into a cylindrical metal tube, are a potential alternative to copper disk-loaded structures in high-gradient linear accelerators. A joint Naval Research Laboratory/Euclid Techlabs/Argonne National Laboratory study is under way to develop X-band DLA structures capable of sustaining high accelerating gradients. The study makes use of structures designed and fabricated by ANL and Euclid Techlabs, and tests their performance using high-power 11.43-GHz radiation from the NRL Magnicon Facility1 Two significant problems have been discovered, of the structures and rf breakdown at joints between dielectric sections. We will present the results of tests on several recent structures that have demonstrated significant progress in addressing both of these issues.
