Abstract :
The IETF differentiated services (DiffServ) working group focused on providing service differentiation on the Internet. However, the main problem associated with the DiffServ assured services (AS) architecture is that it cannot guarantee fairness and throughput assurance. Accordingly, this paper proposes two schemes to guarantee fairness among flows with different target rates in the AS architecture. The first scheme is a variant of random early detection (RED) with in and out (RIO), called improved RIO (IRIO), which is designed to protect the TCP performance against burst packet losses. The second scheme is a variant of the time sliding window (TSW), called the improved TSW (ITSW), which includes a variable window length method and proportional marking method to improve throughput assurance and fairness. To validate the proposed schemes, their behavior was examined under various simulation environments. The simulation results confirmed that IRIO and ITSW improved fairness and throughput assurance in AS architecture
