Abstract :
The spatial distribution of water in water trees grown in polyethylene by the water needle method was determined using FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared) microspectroscopy. The water content decreased from the base of the tree to the front in agreement with optical microscopy measurements on water-filled microcavities. Besides water, ether groups were detected with a distribution similar to that of water. No other absorption band was detected in the purely water-treed specimens which were analyzed
