Abstract :
Slotted ALOHA protocols for integrated voice and data transmission over a satellite channel are studied on the basis of the SENET (slotted envelope network) frame structure. The satellite system is characterized by a wideband system with a large number of geographically distributed small voice and data users. The effect of different levels of voice background on data packet delay is explicitly shown. It is observed that the slotted ALOHA scheme exhibits a considerable performance degradation when the available capacity for data transmission fluctuates significantly due to voice transmissions. An improved ALOHA protocol is proposed which reduces the performance degradation due to the voice traffic.<>
