Abstract :
Strengthening RC structures with CFRP sheets or plates is now a hot issue, but the cases of strengthening steel structures with CFRP are still rare especially for single axisymmetric construction members. This paper aims to investigate mechanical behaviors of single axisymmetric steel beams strengthened with CFRP sheets. An experiment about six samples was carried out to study the influences of layer number of CFRP sheets on single axisymmetric steel beam. These six samples were divided into three groups according to the width of the tensile flange, and each group includes two beams strengthened with one and two layers of CFRP sheets respectively. And then this paper studies the capacity and utilization ratio of steel beams strengthened with CFRP sheets. The results show that strains of these samples accod with plane section assumption and CFRP strengthening axisymmetric steel beam can advance the beam´s capacity remarkably compared with biaxial symmetrical steel beam. And so, strengthening single axisymmetric beams with CFRP is beneficial to make the best of these two types of material and reduce total steel quantities.
