Abstract
The general expressions for the density function, mean and variance of a random variable characterising the error sequence of a cascaded digital channel, composed of N elementary channels, are derived. The expressions are applied to develop accurate and reliable methods and techniques for the probability of error estimation in cascaded channels with and without memory. For this purpose, the expressions for the sample size are derived as a function of the memory parameter and the number of elementary channels in a cascade.
