            Abstract : 
Describes the design, development and implementation of a research programme to investigate methods of autonomous navigation for an unmanned aircraft (UMA) using the Global Positioning System (GPS). The programme objectives were to use the XRAE1 air vehicle and its gust-insensitive control system to integrate a GPS `engine´ with the digital flight control system (DFCS); to carry out data-gathering flight trials to establish GPS performance under flight conditions; to design and develop autonomous navigation algorithms; and to flight-test the complete system
