On the application of TDMA in UMTS

This paper presents an overview of some of the issues involved in applying TDMA based techniques to the design of a UMTS radio access system. In particular it considers the essential requirements on the design of the (Universal Mobile Telecommunications Systems) UMTS air interface and the opportunities and constraints inherent in a TDMA based solution. The paper concludes with a description of a potential TDMA solution, which, although based on the work of the RACE ATDMA project, has been suitably adapted to fit better with a GSM evolution scenario
