Abstract
In this paper, the authors describe an automated system which uses the distribution network as a communication media for connecting an electricity supply utility with its customers. This system was the outcome of an international research project jointly undertaken by Landis and Gyr and the Greek electricity supply company PPC (Public Power Corporation). The design and implementation phase took place in Switzerland, whereas the installation, testing and evaluation phases were carried out in Athens. The purpose of the project was to investigate the technical feasibility of two-way communications through the distribution lines of the PPC network and to demonstrate the potential benefits of such an approach for both the utility and the consumers.
