Abstract :
Since the research capability has become a key requirement on computer science undergraduates for regional university in China, we explored ways in which to support students in involving in the computer research projects and enhancing their capability during their studies. In this paper we share our approach and experiences with heightening challenges and opportunities to undergraduate students as part of their learning environment via a program that aims to get the computer science undergraduates interested in, involved with research early in their studies. This program would benefit both students and faculty by providing increased interaction between the groups, increasing student intellectual maturity, furthering faculty research programs by the participation of undergraduate students. Results from our first 3 years indicate the program is manageable and effective for increasing students´ capability and desire to conduct research, which has led to a dramatic increase in the amount of undergraduate involvement in the research in our department and resulted in numerous research publications and awards. We hope that our experiences can throw some light on the potentialities, limitations, options, and effects of promoting aspects of developing undergraduates´ computer science research capabilities for regional university.
