Abstract :
A new technique that allows the absolute measurement of W-values for a wide range of gases at atmospheric pressures and low energy X-rays was developed. This technique is based on the measurement of the total absorbed energy with a proportional counter together with the measurement of the corresponding primary charge. The system also integrates a gas proportional scintillation counter for crosschecking of the results when scintillating gases are used. Experimental results obtained with this technique for 5.9 keV X-rays in Xe, Xe-60%Ne and Xe-10%CH4 mixtures are presented and their accuracy discussed
