Abstract :
Distributed control applications relying on network-based communications are becoming increasingly popular. Obviously, the network performance has a strong influence on the control application and must be taken into account during the design. This paper investigates the effects of network delay and jitter on a control loop and discusses design issues for the example of an EIA-709.1 control application used over the Internet. Simulation results show that the overshoot behavior of the control depends linearly on the delay distribution.
